Cosmetic Dentistry
As our culture advances and we are more exposed to celebrities and pretty people through the visual media; magazines, movies, television, direct advertising and color newspapers, we become enamoured of the look and visual appeal of these people. We notice their smiles, the bright white colors, the aesthetic shape of their teeth and the overall effect it has on their faces. No doubt about it, a smile adds a lot to your looks.
Now, as a patient, you are bombarded with phone book ads, direct mailings and newspaper ads that appear in all the media. They direct you to go to this one or that one's office for "great cosmetic care".
Now comes the hard part, how do you choose the right dentist for that "perfect smile". The American Dental Association has no recognized dental specialty for "Cosmetic Dental Care". As a result any and all dentists can call themselves cosmetic dentists. Cosmetic training can be only as little as a one day course by another "cosmetic dentist", or it can be a three year dental residency in cosmetics and tooth function. This training is under the guidance of the American Dental Association. Thee specialty residencies are in the field called Prosthodontics. Because of the freedom of usage of the term "cosmetic dentist", we have staffed our office with four (4) board qualified prosthodontists. All of them with extensive training in cosmetic dental care. In fact, one of our dentists is the Director of Advanced Dentistry and the Director of the Aesthetic Dental Program at Boston University.
Achieving the correct and beautiful smile that you see in the media can be easy and it can be difficult. The complexity of a smile involves the shape of your face, the shape and position of your teeth and the color of your teeth. This means that achieving that great smile can include minor tooth movement by an orthodontist, it can include laser reshaping of your gums and finally it will include the intervention of a skilled experienced clinician to create the right smile for your face. This doesn't mean that to correct your smile we need all of these services. It is great to get the opinions and input of other skilled dental professionals.
